What is Make Belief Comix?

Make Belief Comix is a website that allows you to create your own personalized comic strips. This site was created by Bill Zimmerman in late 2006 with the idea that all people should be able to have fun, be able to make comics with characters that have different moods, to explore new possibilities, and be creative. You are able to choose from a variety of previously made characters and I think that it is very fun because you are free make your characters say whatever you want on the site. It is offered in many languages, including English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Latin, and Portuguese, and they hope to make the site offer more Asian languages like Korean and Japanese. Although this site may be geared towards children, people of all ages are encouraged to express themselves on the site.

How Can This Be Used in the Classroom?

Generally this site is solely used for recreational purposes, but it can also be used in the classroom for younger grades. The site gives a list of suggestions on how this site can be used in the classroom and some of the ways include having children create a comic that explains their personality and talking about the most important things in their life, like family and whatnot. It can also be used for autistic children to help them focus on improving the social behaviors in which they are lacking. They can also be
used to create storyboards for stories that children hope to write in the future and how they can improve their writing. This site is more geared towards children, so most of the ways it can be used in the classroom are for elementary school children, but there are ways that it can be used in a high school setting. It could be used as an introduction to some sort of animation class, so that students that are unfamiliar with animation can get acquainted with the topic of animation.

What are the Cons?

Aside from all of the praise that I have given this site, there are some cons. You are only limited to a few different characters, and you are also not able to create your own characters from scratch. The characters are also only limited to a few different emotions, which can be slightly annoying if you are trying to make a very emotional comic or you need a different mood. I don't recommend this site to you if you are the type of person who likes to be in control of their art.

In conclusion, this site is very family orientated and can be used for many purposes, from educating small children to just plain having fun and making some simple comic strips.
